Homemade wipes…safe and chemical free!

You may wonder why I make homemade wipes, but have you ever wondered what’s really in your cleaning products? If you already know, that’s great, but if you don’t, I hope you’ll take some time to go to ewg.org to look them up and see if you’re comfortable. I became uncomfortable with these toxic products a few years ago and we switched to natural cleaning methods. One of my favorite ways to clean naturally is to keep homemade wipes around for quick clean ups, door handles, light switches and remotes when we’re trying to keep everyone well.

Warnings without ingredients…seriously?

After years of overusing store-bought cleaners, I had an awakening! I am not sure exactly how or when I realized that cleaning wipes, abrasive powder cleaners, foaming cleaners, shower cleaners, pretty much ALL cleaners are filled with toxic chemicals. So toxic in fact, that if you read the label, it usually has instructions to open a window or use in a space of 5,200 square feet (that would be one nice bathroom!). There are also emergency instructions in the event it is swallowed or gets on your skin. I never paid much attention to these warnings because I had seen them all my life. I was used to them!

When I started reading about how these chemicals can break down your immune system, cause major respiratory issues, disrupt the endocrine system and are even linked to the thing we fear most, something had to change. And, but the way, I was infuriated when I learned that old laws protect these companies and they do not have to put the ingredients on their products. Seriously?!! It was one of my first realizations that it’s up to me and my husband to protect our daughters; we cannot assume that because it is sold on a shelf it is safe. Sadly, it’s usually not.

Making the switch is easy…

Okay, enough of my rant! Rather than complain and be angry, I set to work learning how I could clean my house more naturally. I do not miss the chemical cleaners at all. My house is just as clean as before and we all feel better for it. Baking soda and vinegar have become my friend, but I know I wouldn’t be able to clean as effectively without Thieves Household Cleaner. Avoid Petroleum Jelly

Yep, it’s been around forever, but that doesn’t make it safe. It is a byproduct of the oil industry and it actually makes it so your skin cannot breathe. It can also contribute to estrogen dominance, it is a possible carcinogen and it may break down collagen. Yuck

Avoid Chemicals Skin Care Regimen

This includes your lotions, shampoos, conditioners, salves, facial products and anything you use on your skin. Not sure where to start? EWG’s Skin Deep Database is a great place to start checking your products.

Go Natural

There are so many awesome natural products out there, but you have to be careful and check out their ingredients. Just saying ‘all-natural’ on the front isn’t a guarantee that it’s safe. When in doubt, use organic coconut oil or jojoba oil. I love jojoba oil on my face because it isn’t greasy. If you tend to have oily skin, grapeseed oil may be better for you because it is a bit more drying.

Use Safer Sunscreens

Most of the popular sunscreens on the market are loaded with harmful chemicals. It’s worth finding safer alternatives that work for your family. Check out my post here to learn more about chemicals in sunscreen and to find great alternatives. If you do accidentally get too much sun, be sure the products you’re using for relief are chemical-free too. My family loves Young Living’s Lavender and LavaDerm Cooling Mist after long summer days.

Take a Break

Stress is hard on your skin and can worsen skin issues you may already battle. Find a way to reduce stress each day whether it’s a long walk, yoga, tapping (EFT), meditation or whatever you think would provide you the most stress relief.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

It’s amazing how much better you feel when you drink enough water. Your skin will feel better too! Make sure you get enough, especially during the warmer summer months.

Eat Your Vitamins

Though there is definitely a time to supplement, one of the best ways to get your vitamins and minerals is to eat a variety of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Reach for fruits and veggies before you reach for other snacks. Do this and your skin will thank you!

Don’t Skimp On Your Face

Be sure to give your face the attention it needs and this means washing with a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening, following up with toner to close your pores and finishing off with hydrating moisturizer. Also, be sure to gently exfoliate your facial skin 2 to 3 times per week and consider a hydrating masque two to three times per month. I use the A.R.T. Skin Care System and couldn’t be happier with my skin.

Use Essential Oils Safely

It’s important to understand the safe use of essential oils and this includes knowing that several oils and blends are photosensitive. This means that when applied topically, these oils can actually increase the effect of the suns rays on your skin and result in a terrible burn. If you apply a photosensitive oil to your skin, such as lemon essential oil, be sure that the area you applied it to isn’t in the direct sunlight for at least 12 to 24 hours. Do You Need to Break Up With Your Hand Sanitizer?

Dear Hand Sanitizer…it’s you, not me!

Depending on the kind of hand sanitizer you’ve been using, you just might be chipping away at your health and anyone else’s in your sterilizing path. I’ve got three simple questions to help you decide if you need start seeing new ways to clean your hands. If you answer yes to any of these three questions…you must read on and decide for yourself.

  • Do you feel paralyzed (or at least mildly stressed) when you forget your hand sanitizer?
  • Do you have travel size sanitizers (or hey, even larger versions) stashed in your purse, car, or home?
  • Does your hand sanitizer contain ingredients you can’t pronounce and/or fragrance or parfum?

Is hand sanitizer bad news?So, what’s the problem?

Of course, we want clean hands AND we want to minimize exposure to various microbes and bugs out there. BUT…you guys, this stuff can be bad news! Especially for those sweet little people we so badly want to protect; our kids!

In many versions, you’ll find fragrance (parfum), triclosan, propylene glycoltriethanolamine, tocopherol acetate, amino methyl propanol…and this is just a small list! To make it fairly simple, just look for those hard-to-say ingredient names and try to avoid them as much as possible. I’ve linked many (but not all) of the harmful ingredients to EWG’s information about them so you can learn a little more. I hope this helps you!

4 Steps to Breaking Up with Hand Sanitizer

  1. Read the ingredients and throw away any that list hazardous ingredients.
  1. Choose hand washing over hand sanitizer whenever possible and be sure you’re using regular soap rather than the extra strong kinds because they have many of the same ingredients and issues as hand sanitizer.
  1. Take comfort in the fact that our bodies have amazing immune systems that are meant to help us stay well. Repeatedly wiping out all the microbes – good and bad – isn’t the best way to support our immune systems.
  1. Have a safer option for those times when you know you can’t wash. You know, those times when you’re are absolutely disgusted by what just happened and you’re freakin’ out a little! Haha. This is the time for the safer option for sure!!

The Wellness Saboteur

Getting support for your health and wellness goalsBeware…the Wellness Saboteur!

Do you have a wellness saboteur in your life? These saboteurs are present in our lives and if we’re not aware, we could allow them to derail us from our wellness path. You know them, they’re the ones that say “One cookie isn’t going to kill you” when you’ve been working so hard to eat healthfully. Or, they’re the one who talks you out of going for your much needed walk. Maybe they’re passive aggressive about it or maybe they come right out and tell us that our wellness goals are crazy. Or, maybe they just aren’t in the same place as you and they really believe they have your best interest at heart. They may not be aware of their affect on you and may even be supportive of you in some ways, but not in others. Whichever way, be aware! These people are wellness saboteurs. Period. They can make you doubt yourself, entice you to ditch your plan or ultimately make you lose sight of your goals. If you know one of these saboteurs, you’ve got a few choices for how to deal with them and if you are one, then please try to be more supportive of the wellness goals of those you love.

Making a positive change for your overall wellness is a personal choice, but it can be oh so difficult. Not just because YOU have to make the change, but because you need support. I have experienced this many times in my life. I have spent years looking for health clues and attempting to support optimal health for various reasons and I continue to do so to this day. It’s actually a huge part of who I am! However, to some in my life, this is pure craziness! Crazy to keep looking, crazy to change what I eat, crazy to think I can help myself, crazy that I don’t just accept my current reality or settle for good enough. But the reality is, I won’t ever give up on my optimal health! I am compelled to support my body, my mind and my immune system. And yes, my oils and oil infused products are a big part of that BUT so is eating healthy, taking the right supplements, getting exercise, nurturing my spirit, always learning and seeking advice from healthcare professionals. Look, if any person thinks an oil or a pill or anything else will be a magic answer for them when they eat like crap, continually drink too much, don’t get enough sleep, or make poor wellness choices, of course they’ll be sorely disappointed in whatever they try. So much of any healthy choice we make is about mindset and willpower! 

Believe in Yourself and Find Your Wellness Support

The bottom line is: when you make a positive health change such as adding more fruits and vegetables, doing more exercise or going chemical-free, you need SUPPORT! I’m so grateful for the support I receive from my husband and others, because of course I have my saboteurs. The ones who want me to embrace my health challenge and just be quiet. So, that’s what I’ll choose to be with the saboteurs; I’ll try my best to be quiet, but it’s hard not to share. If you have a saboteur and they’re not a necessary member of your inner circle, then I say, cut your losses. But, if they’re a close family member or friend who you love, you have a few choices: A. If you feel it’s possible, specifically ask for their support and share a website or other important information with them with them. –or– B. Accept their non-support and continue sharing your life and wellness goals while being strong enough to take their discouragement and stay on track. –or– C. Just don’t share as much information with them. It’s a bummer, but it’s sort of like taking a favorite item and just setting it on a shelf for a time. Wellness changes are BIG, they’re so big that we can’t do it all alone. We have to have understanding and support from the people we spend most of our time with.

I hope you make a necessary or positive wellness change this year and if you have a wellness saboteur in your life, I hope you set clear boundaries for yourself. I wish for you to find your supportive tribe, rely on them and repeat after me:

  • I am excited about living my life with optimal health!
  • I choose to protect and nourish my body!
  • I am strong enough to make this positive wellness change!
  • I deserve optimal health and a life filled with wellness, purpose and abundance!

I’ll never be able to say enough about the amazing things teachers do each school year! As a certified K-12 teacher-librarian, I feel privledged to work with and see great teachers in action every single day. Teachers truly care about their students and about the skills, tools and concepts they impart on them. It’s an all-consuming job and though I know educators are appreciated by many, I want a chance to show my appreciation too.

One of my ‘whys’ in my Young Living business is to be able to give back to teachers and teacher-librarians who deserve it.  I know first hand that there are times when an educator could do so much more if they just had _____ (fill in the blank here) in their classroom. How awesome would it be to be able to give a teacher something they really need?!? I’m not there yet…but for now, I can do small things and I’d like to do just that twice a year. I’ll be doing a special public school educator giveaway in January and August from now on and as my business grows, I’m sure I’ll be able to offer even better giveaways.
