Homemade Wipes Recipe

Homemade wipes…safe and chemical free!

You may wonder why I make homemade wipes, but have you ever wondered what’s really in your cleaning products? If you already know, that’s great, but if you don’t, I hope you’ll take some time to go to ewg.org to look them up and see if you’re comfortable. I became uncomfortable with these toxic products a few years ago and we switched to natural cleaning methods. One of my favorite ways to clean naturally is to keep homemade wipes around for quick clean ups, door handles, light switches and remotes when we’re trying to keep everyone well.

Warnings without ingredients…seriously?

After years of overusing store-bought cleaners, I had an awakening! I am not sure exactly how or when I realized that cleaning wipes, abrasive powder cleaners, foaming cleaners, shower cleaners, pretty much ALL cleaners are filled with toxic chemicals. So toxic in fact, that if you read the label, it usually has instructions to open a window or use in a space of 5,200 square feet (that would be one nice bathroom!). There are also emergency instructions in the event it is swallowed or gets on your skin. I never paid much attention to these warnings because I had seen them all my life. I was used to them!

When I started reading about how these chemicals can break down your immune system, cause major respiratory issues, disrupt the endocrine system and are even linked to the thing we fear most, something had to change. And, but the way, I was infuriated when I learned that old laws protect these companies and they do not have to put the ingredients on their products. Seriously?!! It was one of my first realizations that it’s up to me and my husband to protect our daughters; we cannot assume that because it is sold on a shelf it is safe. Sadly, it’s usually not.

Making the switch is easy…

Okay, enough of my rant! Rather than complain and be angry, I set to work learning how I could clean my house more naturally. I do not miss the chemical cleaners at all. My house is just as clean as before and we all feel better for it. Baking soda and vinegar have become my friend, but I know I wouldn’t be able to clean as effectively without Thieves Household Cleaner. It’s 100% plant based; includes powerhouse essential oils like Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary; and it works! All you germaphobe mamas out there, I was just like you once and believe me, this stuff works! And the best part is, you can use it around your kids. Even they can use it and you don’t have to worry about their skin absorbing something harmful.

Ten Tips for Summer Skin

Don’t you just love summer? It might depend on where you live, but if you live where the winter season is long and freezing cold, it’s definitely a time to celebrate and soak up the temporary heat. When you’re out there enjoying all the fun, be sure to take excellent care of your skin! 10 tips for the best summer skin

Ten Tips for Taking Better Care of Your Skin This Summer

Avoid Petroleum Jelly

Yep, it’s been around forever, but that doesn’t make it safe. It is a byproduct of the oil industry and it actually makes it so your skin cannot breathe. It can also contribute to estrogen dominance, it is a possible carcinogen and it may break down collagen. Yuck

Avoid Chemicals Skin Care Regimen

This includes your lotions, shampoos, conditioners, salves, facial products and anything you use on your skin. Not sure where to start? EWG’s Skin Deep Database is a great place to start checking your products.

Go Natural

There are so many awesome natural products out there, but you have to be careful and check out their ingredients. Just saying ‘all-natural’ on the front isn’t a guarantee that it’s safe. When in doubt, use organic coconut oil or jojoba oil. I love jojoba oil on my face because it isn’t greasy. If you tend to have oily skin, grapeseed oil may be better for you because it is a bit more drying.

Use Safer Sunscreens

Most of the popular sunscreens on the market are loaded with harmful chemicals. It’s worth finding safer alternatives that work for your family. Check out my post here to learn more about chemicals in sunscreen and to find great alternatives. If you do accidentally get too much sun, be sure the products you’re using for relief are chemical-free too. My family loves Young Living’s Lavender and LavaDerm Cooling Mist after long summer days.

Take a Break

Stress is hard on your skin and can worsen skin issues you may already battle. Find a way to reduce stress each day whether it’s a long walk, yoga, tapping (EFT), meditation or whatever you think would provide you the most stress relief.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

It’s amazing how much better you feel when you drink enough water. Your skin will feel better too! Make sure you get enough, especially during the warmer summer months.

Eat Your Vitamins

Though there is definitely a time to supplement, one of the best ways to get your vitamins and minerals is to eat a variety of fresh fruits and veggies every day. Reach for fruits and veggies before you reach for other snacks. Do this and your skin will thank you!

Don’t Skimp On Your Face

Be sure to give your face the attention it needs and this means washing with a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening, following up with toner to close your pores and finishing off with hydrating moisturizer. Also, be sure to gently exfoliate your facial skin 2 to 3 times per week and consider a hydrating masque two to three times per month. I use the A.R.T. Skin Care System and couldn’t be happier with my skin.

Use Essential Oils Safely

It’s important to understand the safe use of essential oils and this includes knowing that several oils and blends are photosensitive. This means that when applied topically, these oils can actually increase the effect of the suns rays on your skin and result in a terrible burn. If you apply a photosensitive oil to your skin, such as lemon essential oil, be sure that the area you applied it to isn’t in the direct sunlight for at least 12 to 24 hours. For a complete list of photosensitive essential oils, click here.

Happy summer and happy skin to you!

Do You Need to Break Up With Your Hand Sanitizer?

Dear Hand Sanitizer…it’s you, not me!

Depending on the kind of hand sanitizer you’ve been using, you just might be chipping away at your health and anyone else’s in your sterilizing path. I’ve got three simple questions to help you decide if you need start seeing new ways to clean your hands. If you answer yes to any of these three questions…you must read on and decide for yourself.

  • Do you feel paralyzed (or at least mildly stressed) when you forget your hand sanitizer?
  • Do you have travel size sanitizers (or hey, even larger versions) stashed in your purse, car, or home?
  • Does your hand sanitizer contain ingredients you can’t pronounce and/or fragrance or parfum?

Is hand sanitizer bad news? So, what’s the problem?

Of course, we want clean hands AND we want to minimize exposure to various microbes and bugs out there. BUT…you guys, this stuff can be bad news! Especially for those sweet little people we so badly want to protect; our kids!

In many versions, you’ll find fragrance (parfum), triclosan, propylene glycoltriethanolamine, tocopherol acetate, amino methyl propanol…and this is just a small list! To make it fairly simple, just look for those hard-to-say ingredient names and try to avoid them as much as possible. I’ve linked many (but not all) of the harmful ingredients to EWG’s information about them so you can learn a little more. I hope this helps you!

4 Steps to Breaking Up with Hand Sanitizer

  1. Read the ingredients and throw away any that list hazardous ingredients.
  1. Choose hand washing over hand sanitizer whenever possible and be sure you’re using regular soap rather than the extra strong kinds because they have many of the same ingredients and issues as hand sanitizer.
  1. Take comfort in the fact that our bodies have amazing immune systems that are meant to help us stay well. Repeatedly wiping out all the microbes – good and bad – isn’t the best way to support our immune systems.
  1. Have a safer option for those times when you know you can’t wash. You know, those times when you’re are absolutely disgusted by what just happened and you’re freakin’ out a little! Haha. This is the time for the safer option for sure!!

A Safe Hand Purifier

Of course, my favorite option for cleaning up hands in a pinch is Young Living’s Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier.  Reasons I love it: 1. Safe ingredients 2. Doesn’t dry my hands out 3. It has the power of Thieves essential oil 4. It lasts and lasts because you only need a little… AND because we wash our hands whenever possible.

Please do this today….

Please, please check out your hand sanitizer ingredients and see if they are safe. If not, ditch them and find safer solutions!

If you’re interested in YL’s Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, you can purchase it here or learn more about saving 24% on all of your orders here. If you have any questions, I’m happy to help. Please use my contact feature in the lower right of the screen.

Spring Cleaning Without Chemicals

Before you do your deep cleaning this year, I want to share some of the reasons it’s so important to be sure that what you are cleaning with is safe for you and your family. Unfortunately, if it’s a name brand from the grocery store aisle, it’s very likely not safe at all.

My confession…

We all know the moms who follow everyone around with a clorox wipe, disinfectant or bleach, right?  Don’t worry, I’m not here to judge, in fact, once upon a time, I was that mom! I thought I was protecting myself and my kids; making sure to eliminate any unwanted exposures. But here’s the thing, they still came down with the crud and I was unknowingly exposing them to harsh chemicals and hazards that are in fact proven to contribute to and in many cases be the cause of hormone disruption, various skin reactions, respiratory problems and more.

So what IS in our cleaning products?

Well, here’s the scariest part:  your cleaning products likely won’t list any (and certainly not all) ingredients. This is because the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 grandfathered in well over 60,000 chemicals currently on the market and made it so that these companies did not have list ANY on their packaging  Worse yet, these chemicals and many more, have not been adequately tested for human safety! Scary!! (safer chemicals)

We can’t do better until we know better!

Our skin is our biggest organ and though it is there to protect us, it is also like a sponge, absorbing much of what we touch. In fact, according to the CDC in an article discussing chemical absorption via the skin in workers, it states “Studies show that absorption of chemicals through the skin can occur without being noticed by the worker, and in some cases, may represent the most significant exposure pathway.” If chemicals can be absorbed through the skin of workers, what are our babies and pets absorbing as they walk and crawl across our floors?

I am passionate about helping you and your loved ones reach your full health potential! Unfortunately, true wellness is just impossible if we’re mopping our floors and wiping our counters with harmful substances which we will ultimately absorb and/or transfer to our mouths.

Clean Green….Starting Today

It’s time for all of us to ditch those chemicals and make the switch to a few simple and natural cleaners. Learn how you can save money and time with a few simple, safe products and ingredients.

Here’s to happier & healthier cleaning!

How To Budget and Save on Healthy Lifestyle Products

Getting started with a truly healthier lifestyle begins with switching out products (also called replacement buying). This is when, as you use up the last bits of your chemical-laden products, you replace them with safer, organic options. For example, toothpaste and vitamin B almost gone? Replace them with Super B and Thieves Dentarome Toothpaste and feel good about the switch. Don’t overwhelm yourself, just start somewhere — any switch you make is a big, positive step in the right direction.. With your cleaners, the sooner you can toss the toxic ones (which is most of them), the better. Replace them with vinegar, baking soda and Thieves Household Cleaner. You’re on your way! Now all you have to do is budget in the monthly allowance you’re comfortable with (as little as $50 per month can make a big difference) for replacement buying and decide whether earning free products with the best customer loyalty program is right for you!

Use a Customer Loyalty Program to Earn Free Products

Many people either don’t understand Young Living’s Essential Rewards Program (ER) or they don’t even know it exists. Either way, I’m sharing some information and a cost breakdown with you so you can decide if this awesome customer loyalty program would be a good fit for you and/or your family to start switching over to safe, wholesome and chemical-free products.

Remember, wholesale members of Young Living already save 24% on every purchase, so signing up for Essential Rewards creates even more savings! Not a member? You can learn more about our wholesale membership here.

This monthly autoship program benefits anyone who:

  • truly wants to overhaul their lifestyle and replace their unhealthy products with a budget in mind
  • wants to be rewarded with credit for being a loyal customer
  • finds themselves ordering fairly often
  • wants to pamper themselves with amazing prouducts
  • puts off ordering and then places large orders to get all they have been meaning to order
  • would like to budget around $50/month to invest in their family’s wellness & chemical free-living each month

When you sign up for Essential Rewards, you earn ER points equal to dollars based on the PV you spend each month. *Note: PV stands for product volume and in most cases, is equal to the wholesale dollar amount of an item (diffusers, rare oils, catalogs etc., have lower or no PV). A minimum monthly order of 50PV is required for the ER program. For the first 3 consecutive months, you earn 10% back in product credit. Then in months 4 to 24, you earn 20% back in months 4 to 24 and you get 25% back from month 25 on.

For example, let’s say Sally signs up for Essential Rewards in March. She’ll go to the Essential Rewards section in her Virtual Office, sign up and pick a monthly ship date. She picks the 2nd of every month (she can change the date whenever she needs to and she can cancel ER at any time). She can change her order each month to maximize her replacement buying and her budget (changes need to be made no later than 11:59 p.m. on her ship date) Let’s go through an made up example to give you an idea of how you could maximize Essential Rewards for your own needs.

The Sample Savings Breakdown

Homemade Non-Dairy Pumpkin Spice Creamer

Make your own pumpkin spice creamer

Are There Chemicals in Your Favorite Creamer?

Commercial non-dairy creamer was a staple in our house for years and I’ll admit that I drank it daily without thinking much of it. In my thirties, I developed an allergy and sensitivity to dairy products, so I gave up half and half and bought the non-dairy option. About three years ago, I began to take notice of the many chemical ingredients in store bought non-dairy creamers. Concerned and disgusted, I gave them up. It turns out that some of the dangerous chemicals these products contain can include hydrogenated soybean oil, mono- and diglycerides, sodium caseinate, dipotassium phosphate and natural flavoring. Did you know that natural can mean just about anything? When an ingredient list says ‘natural’ it’s usually code for something else such as MSG or with vanilla flavored items, it may even mean castoreum, which is vanilla-scented secretions from beavers’ behinds. Yuck!  Do a little research on these ‘ingredients’ and you may become concerned too.

No More Sugar

Shortly after I gave up non-dairy creamer, I learned that I also have a food sensitivity which causes fatigue, bloating and pain when I consume cane sugar (or any sweeter derived from cane sugar) and fruit within six hours of each other. This may sound weird to you, but learning this and changing how I eat has improved my health tremendously. I quickly realized that it would just be easier to eliminate sugar I love fruit. If I want to have sugar, I have to plan for it and I rarely want to give up lemon water  just so I can have a slice of calorie-laden treats.

In all of my clean-eating diet changes, I’ve considered giving coffee up altogether, but it is something I look forward to each day. Rising before the rest of my family, I savor my coffee as I enjoy some quiet time to think, prepare mentally for my day and yes, write this blog. I now enjoy my coffee black with a sprinkle of cinnamon or with just a bit of almond milk and agave (luckily, fruit sugars are okay for me).

The Recipe…

Sadly, no more sugar or dairy means no more pumpkin spiced lattes when out at about in the fall! Even if an espresso shop has almond or coconut milk, the syrups are full of sugar or fake chemical-sugar, which I also avoid. So, imagine my excitement when I recently saw a recipe for non-dairy pumpkin spice creamer. I whipped some up that very day and my husband and I have been loving it! I switched up the recipe just a bit and came up with this version which is certain to be healthier than the coffee shop version too!

Add the following ingredients to a blender or bowl for mixing:

  • 1 13.5 oz can of unsweetened organic coconut milk (or 1 1/2 cups of your any unsweetened non-dairy milk)
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup organic pumpkin (depending on your preference for pumpkin flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 drop Cinnamon Bark Vitality essential oil
  • 1 drop Clove Vitality essential oil
  • 1 drop Ginger Vitality essential oil
  • 1 drop Nutmeg Vitality essential oil

Mix ingredients with blender, mixer or emulsifying whisk and place in an air tight storage container such as a canning jar. Add a bit of creamer and your choice of sweeter if you would like and enjoy!! I prefer just a tablespoon of this delicious creamer and a touch of agave in my coffee.

Loving My Thieves Dish Soap

What’s Lurking in Your Dish Soap?

Last year, we gave up big brand name dish soaps because many of them have earned ‘D’ or ‘F’ ratings from the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org).  EWG actually lists every chemical and the related health concern for each product such as: developmental & reproductive toxicity; carcinogens; respiratory disruption; skin irritant; environmental concerns.

Since learning about our name brand dish soap, we’ve been using what I thought was a better option and I guess is was a little because it rated a ‘C’. Fragrance and methylisothiazolinone were the biggest concerns in brand I was choosing. In my research, I found another popular brand which touts its cleaning products as non-toxic, to have their dish soaps rate an ‘F.’ Be sure to check the label of your dish soap and if the ingredients are not clearnly listed, contact the company for a complete listing. You can also check your dish soap at ewg.org/guides/cleaners. Your health and the health of your family will certainly benefit when you reduce chemicals around you.

Thieves Dish Soap…it’s Chemical Free Option

Young Living’s introduction of Thieves Dish Soap could not have come at a better time for us. We’ve been using it for a few weeks now and we love it! It has a clean, light scent and it works wonders on our dishes. It’s a powerhouse with its infusion of Thieves, Jade Lemon and Bergamot essential oils. Thieves Dish Soap is 100% plant-based and is free from sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), artificial colors, synthetic fragrance and phosphates. Every time we swap a chemical laden product with a natural and safe choice, we are making progress toward a healthier lifestyle.

Young Living…a Wellness Investment

My Oils…My Wellness Investment

When I made the decision to purchase the Premium Starter Kit (PSK) from Young Living, I really did feel like I was making an investment in my health. To be honest…I looked at my husband and said, “I want to this essential oil kit because I really think they could help our family.” He said to go for it!  After all, how many other things do I regularly invest in to support my own and my family’s wellness? Massages, supplements, chiropractors, exercise equipment and yes, I may have purchased some crazy contraption to lay on in hopes of aligning my sacrum! 🙂 Some of these investments have been worth it…others maybe not so much!

Essential Oil Benefits…Very Affordable!

By the time I ordered my oils, I had done enough research that I felt extremely hopeful and excited as I awaited the arrival of my Premium Starter Kit. Once my oils came, I started using them right away. I knew I couldn’t experience their benefits if they were just sitting on a shelf. As I began using them, I realized several things.

  1. Less is more with 100% pure oils, so my 5ml bottles would last quite some time if I used them correctly.
  2. With regular use of my oils, I just experienced better overall wellness. Instead of waiting for something to be wrong, I learned to support my wellness every day.
  3. The price of the oils is based on the resources it takes to make them. For example, rose oil takes 300 rose buds to make one little bottle! No wonder it is highly priced. On the other hand, there are so many oils from Young Living which cost less than $20!
  4. The oils are very affordable when I look at the cost per drop. I can turn to an oil for physical or emotional support for a very low cost. For example, I can support the immune systems of myself, my children and my husband for just pennies (or less) a day!
  5. I now save money by using them to make my own cleaning, beauty and bath products.
  6. The oils are truly a small price to pay for chemical-free living! The air in our home is no longer filled with toxic air fresheners, cleaning products and outlet ‘aromas.’

Just think about what we choose to spend money on each month. Of course, we all have our non-negotiable bills to pay, but after that, where do we manage to find an extra $20? I thought it would be fun to compare the price of the oils to every day or normal expenses in our lives.  For example, many of us don’t bat an eye at a $50 dinner out now and again. Three of those dinners would pay for a Premium Starter Kit! Even think of what most people spend on their favorite beverages per month  – those coffees, teas and wine add up. I feel so happy each day that I made this wellness investment and have an affordable and effective way to support myself and my family in a natural way! You can invest in your family’s wellness with one of our starter kits and save 24% on all of your orders. Learn more HERE!

Until next time…be well & happy!

Coconut Oil for Dirty Teeth!

Say ‘NO’ to Chemicals in Toothpaste…

I am so happy that I forgot my toothpaste on a recent overnight trip because I learned a new way to clean and brighten my teeth! I was at my parents’ house and though I could have used their not-so-healthy name brand toothpaste…I really didn’t want to! My family has been using all-natural Thieves Toothpaste and Dentarome Plus Toothpaste for the past nine months. We made this switch because I learned that many (not all – but do your research) major brands have some scary ingredients and after doing a bit of research, I knew that my family needed to ditch the chemicals!

Want to learn more about the questionable and hazardous ingredients in toothpaste? Here is a good starter article, but you can also Google this and find so much!Coconut oil for whiter teeth

Coconut Oil Plus Essential Oil =’s Shiny Teeth and Fresh Breath!

So, there I was with two options…brush with water or use the creepy stuff (no, I haven’t been successful in getting my parents to switch…yet). As I considered my options, I remembered reading about someone who used Thieves Vitality essential oil blend for brushing in a pinch! This made me think of my coconut oil pulling episodes where I added Thieves! I just happened to have both with me…not so weird that I had Thieves with me, but kinda weird that I had coconut oil, I know! So, I put a bit of coconut oil and a drop of Thieves on my toothbrush and proceeded to brush as normal (Peppermint Vitality oil would be great too)! All I can say is…WOW!!! When I finished, I was surprised at how clean and fresh my mouth and teeth felt! Plus, my teeth definitely looked shinier than normal!

I was so impressed, that I told my husband about it and encouraged him to try it. He is a good sport about my natural ah-ha moments, so he tried it. He was so impressed with his results that he has been brushing his teeth this way once a day. He too feels his teeth appear whiter and brighter!

Try It….

You don’t have to forget your toothpaste to try this! I’m now adding this to my oral hygiene regimen. It’s easy to do in place of one of my regular brushings or to add at the end of a regular brushing. It’s a refreshing, all-natural way to clean up your teeth and brighten your smile! Just be sure to use a balanced toothpaste at least once or twice a day to be sure you are keeping the right PH balance in your mouth. My Thieves and Dentarome toothpastes along with my coconut oil brushing must be working because yesterday my hygienist commented on how white my teeth were and asked if I was bleaching! When I said no, she asked if I was using whitening toothpaste. Nope! She was perplexed at my “beautiful pink gums and white teeth,” but I’m not!

Here’s to better days with chemical-free living! Until next time, take care!
